Finding a Mentor

A mentor is someone you respect and can learn something from.4 Mentors provide you with a support system and outside perspective from someone who has successfully navigated through the challenging decisions you’re currently facing. Mentors can help you determine what your road to success looks like and how to develop the skills you need, identify your strengths and learn to utilize them. They provide guidance and encouragement through a trusted relationship that helps you stay motivated and focused while challenging you to think and grow in new ways.

There are many formal programs that can help you identify a mentor, but if you are looking to find a mentor on your own, there are a few helpful tips you should consider. First, decide what you hope to get out of the mentoring relationship and set some goals. Spend time determining what kind of characteristics you’re looking for in a mentor and think about people in your life with these characteristics. Make sure your mentor is someone you trust. Once you’ve identified a potential mentor, be certain to communicate what you hope to get out of the relationship.
