Finding a Job You Love

Once you have determined what is most important to you in a work environment, youre ready to start narrowing down the possibilities to those that are a good fit for you. While it sounds “old school”, talking with people you may know (or friends-of-friends) who have a job in your field or one related to the field you want to pursue is a great way to network and get your foot in the door.

Here are a few tips for you to consider during your job search:

  • There are a lot of online job boards that can open the door to new opportunities. A Web site, such as Weddles, provides a directory of these job boards that may help you find a job you love.
  • Let people know youre looking for a job and be specific about what youre interested in doing. You never know when someone will know about a job opening and recommend you for the position.
  • Don't forget about the want ads! Many companies still place ads in local and national newspapers and in trade (industry) journals.
  • Pursue informational interviews with companies that interest you, even if no job is currently available. This may lead to future opportunities down the road. Schedule informational interviews by contacting the companys human resources department.
  • Connect with alumni from your high school or college to see if you can job shadow (follow them in their work environment).
  • Volunteer. Its a great way to meet people and may connect you to individuals or companies that are looking to hire.
  • Be persistent, courteous and confident.

It also may be helpful to check out companies with a proven history of high employee satisfaction. Every year the top jobs in the U.S. are released, maybe you can find one that fits your path.
